Youth of the Year

One of the highlights of National Boys & Girls Club Week is our annual Youth of the Year event.  Nominees from each BGCA Clubhouse are judged based on their involvement and leadership at their Club; academic performance and extra-curricular activities at school; and their volunteer service both at BGCA and in the community.  We want to CONGRATULATE Joel Brito, age 16, and a junior at William Allen High School, who has been selected as this year’s winner!

Joel has been a member of BGCA for six years.  Although an active member of the Teen Center, he was nominated for his role as a Junior Staff person at our Sixth Street Clubhouse where, in one year, Joel has completed 200 hours of volunteer service.  Some of his activities include helping younger members with homework, mentoring in our literacy programs, and assisting with membership record keeping.  In addition, he is doing his Senior Graduation project at the Club, which involves planning and implementing a computer typing program for younger members.

At the Teen Center, Joel enjoys being with his peers.  Two of his favorite activities are the Hispanic American League of Artists (HALA) program where he is involved with creating, editing and filming movies; and attending Make Your M.A.R.K.™ where he has perfect attendance this year!

At William Allen High School, this young man is an ambitious student working hard in his classes.  His successes include making Honor Roll several times and being been recognized by Kutztown University with an Academic Achievement Award.  He is, also, a member of the Year Book staff.  Joel plans to attend college when he graduates next year.

A special recognition goes to our other Clubhouse nominees for this year that included:
Little Lehigh - Angel Vargas, Age 18, Senior at William Allen High School
Teen Center – Eli Morales, Age 17, Junior at William Allen High School
Turner Street - Chantel Johnson, Age 17, Junior at William Allen High School
