The Boys & Girls Club of Allentown is making a difference in the lives of young students by offering after-school reading and math instruction – work that has drawn the support of PPL Foundation.
PPL recently contributed $5,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of Allentown to support its Make Your M.A.R.K.™ (Motivated Academically Ready Kids) program.
For several years, Make Your M.A.R.K.™ has been annually approved as a qualified innovative educational program to receive funds under the Pennsylvania EITC guidelines. Pennsylvania businesses can earn tax credits by contributing to this.
There are currently ten Make Your M.A.R.K.™ inner-city locations throughout the Allentown area. Students are actively engaged twice a week in after school classes. The educational language arts/reading/English and math materials align with the Allentown School District and Pennsylvania standards for teaching.
Deborah Fries-Jackson, CEO said: “We are very proud of the Make Your M.A.R.K.™ Program and have seen firsthand the difference it has made in the academic achievement of our students. PPL is a generous partner and a longtime supporter of the work we do in our community. Thanks to their generosity, we will be able to continue offering this valuable educational program to our members.”
The PPL Foundation awards annual grants through a competitive application and review process. “PPL is committed to improving the communities where our customers and employees live and work,” said Carol Obando-Derstine, PPL Electric Utilities’ regional affairs director. “Supporting local organizations like the Boys & Girls Club, which enhance education for our community’s children today, will help them be prepared for high-quality jobs tomorrow.”
