There is no doubt that with the opening last year of Coca-Cola Park and the Iron Pigs Minor League Baseball team establishing a home in the Lehigh Valley that our community has greatly benefited on so many levels. In addition to providing affordable and fun family entertainment, the Iron Pigs immediately became a great partner with local organizations serving children and youth. The Boys & Girls Club of Allentown was fortunate to be included among these.
The Iron Pigs have collaborated with us in several areas. One way is that the Iron Pigs Charities recently awarded BGCA a grant to support our after school Literacy 4 R Youth program at our Sixth Street Clubhouse. This valuable Clubhouse-wide educational program develops our members’ reading skills by using three distinct daily sessions that include: Homework Help, Computer Lab support, and Reading Group activities.
Thanks to a partnership with the Iron Pigs and Susquehanna Bank, we are once again this year the fortunate recipient of Susquehanna Bank’s 2009 Strikeout for Straight A’s Program. This means that for each Iron Pigs home game strikeout this season, Susquehanna Bank will make a $10 donation to BGCA. This generous contribution will be used to support our Power Hour program, which provides youth with additional homework help.
Our members have enjoyed going to Coca-Cola Park to see several baseball games thanks to the donation of complementary tickets from the Iron Pigs. They have also supported our youth over the past year by providing “Trick or Treating” at the stadium; collecting and donating school supplies; and providing hats, gloves and mittens to keep our kids warm.
We sincerely appreciate this wonderful relationship and look forward to the great second season of Iron Pigs baseball!
